Native American Domestic Violence Study

LOW-INCOME NATIVE AMERICAN WOMEN IN SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA ARE AT LEAST TWICE AS LIKELY TO SUFFER PHYSICAL OR SEXUAL ASSAULT AT THE HAND OF A PARTNER THAN THE AVERAGE AMERICAN WOMAN. THIS IS ACCORDING TO AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED THIS WEEK IN BIO MED CENTRAL, AN ONLINE MEDICAL JOURNAL. THIS RISK IS GREATLY INCREASED IF THE WOMEN LIVE IN VERY POOR SOCIOECONOMIC CONDITIONS.

More than half of the women questioned at a low income clinic for pregnant and childbearing women in Southwestern Oklahoma reported having been assaulted by a partner during their lifetime. One in eight had been raped by a partner according to research by Universities of New Mexico & Oklahoma.
Nearly forty percent of the women had been kicked, choked, Bitten or hit with a fist or an object.
Nearly three fourths of the women lived at or below the federal poverty level and a third lived in severe poverty.
Lorraine Halinka Malcoe, the lead author on the study, says there is a correlation between the conditions of poverty and intimate partner abuse:

Malcoe, an Albuquerque resident and Associate Professor of Community Health at University of New Mexico Hospital, warns against generalizations about Native Americans, based on one survey.

Malcoe also cautions that many Native cultures had little, if any, tradition of intimate partner violence, prior to European colonization.
